Subjects

As a comprehensive university, Tsinghua has developed  teaching and research platforms in the subjects of sciences, engineering, literatures, arts, history, philosophy, economics, management, law, education, and medicine. 

Tsinghua University holds the most advantageous subjects in science and technology among the universities in China. It has also established a series of featured subjects in the fields of arts, humanities and social sciences.

In the third-round national evaluation of primary subjects organized by the Ministry of Education of China in 2012, Tsinghua University had thirty-two subjects ranked within the top five:

  • Ranked first: biology, mechanics, materials science and engineering, power engineering and engineering thermal physics, electrical engineering, control science and engineering, computer science and technology, architecture, nuclear science and technology, environmental science and engineering, urban planning, software engineering, management science and engineering, and arts design.
  • Ranked second: Marxism theory, instrumental science and technology, hydraulic engineering, biomedical engineering, landscape architecture, and public administration.
  • Ranked third: mechanical engineering, civil ngineering, business administration, and arts theory.
  • Ranked fourth or fifth: sociology, journalism and communications, mathematics, physics, electronic science and technology, information and communication engineering, chemical engineering and technology, and arts.

According to the disciplinary tables in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2015-2016, Tsinghua University is ranked 26th in the subjects of engineering and technology.

According to the QS World University Rankings by subject 2015, Tsinghua University has seven subjects ranked within top 20: civil and structural engineering (7th), architecture/built environment (8th), materials science (11th), mechanical, aeronautical and manufacturing engineering (16th), electrical and electronic engineering (17th), chemistry (17th), chemical engineering (20th). In addition, eight subjects are ranked between 21st and 50th:  environmental sciences (25th), art and design (26th), statistics and operational research (27th), modern language (35th), computer science and information systems (38th), law (39th), physics and astronomy (41st), politics and international studies (48th).   

According to the paper citation statistics updated as of September 10, 2015 from the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) of the ISI Web of Knowledge, Tsinghua University is one of the most cited institutions in the world in the following 14 fields: engineering (7th), materials science (9th), chemistry (22nd), computer science (31st), physics (69th), mathematics (78th), environment/ecology, biology and biochemistry, geosciences, molecular biology and genetics, social sciences (general), pharmacology and toxicology, plant and animal sciences, and clinical medicine.

The Tsinghua School of Economics and Management, praised as "the best business school of China" by Fortune, has been certificated by AACSB and EQUIS.
