Introduction to CNeuro Summer School

How cognition emerges from complex neural circuits within the brain remains an unsolved mystery. The past decade has seen rapid progress in experimental tools that now make it possible to monitor and manipulate brain circuits in unprecedented detail. This evolution presents challenges and opportunities for both experimentalists and theorists, as the complex algorithmics of brain functions cannot be understood with experiments alone. Mathematical and computational theories are instrumental in providing theoretical insights and frameworks that can help guide experimental work and identify unifying principles of brain functions.

The aim of this annually held one-week summer school is to introduce students with a strong quantitative background in mathematics, physics, computer science and engineering to the emerging field of theoretical and computational neuroscience. We wish to make state-of-the-art knowledge accessible to interested students and researchers around the globe. Since 2018, we have invited leading scientists in the field to teach this summer school. The selected faculty lecturers share their expertise and latest research findings with the participants of the summer schools through lectures on introductory and advanced topics, small-group discussions, and career development perspective talks.

The distinguishing feature of CNeuro is the emphasis it places on the role of mathematical and computational theories in understanding the brain, in part by stressing the connections between neuroscience, statistics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. This summer school serves as a pedagogical introduction to the methods particularly relevant to exploring these connections. In the last few years, we have focused on theoretical approaches to neural coding, neuronal dynamics, neuronal representations and network neuroscience. This year’s event will be organized around a central theme — Neural Coding, Decision Making and Cognition — and will examine its various facets, from neurobiology to circuit neuroscience to cognition to artificial intelligence.

Each year, the organizers of the CNeuro summer school make every effort to recruit students from a diverse background, including all genders and ethnic groups. CNeuro2024 will be held on July 8-15 in Beijing, China.
