Work Permit

Applying for a Work Permit

Full time international scholars working in China with a Z Visa or R Visa must apply for a Work Permit through the Office of International Affairs at the Beijing Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs after their arrival. The following documents are required:


(1) Passport (ORIGINAL, photocopy and scanned electronic version in color)

(2) Z Visa or R Visa (for scholars) and S1 Visa (for accompanying family members), and the passport page with the entry stamp of China Customs (photocopy and electronic version in color)

(3) 2-inch portrait photos (front-facing, no hat, white background; electronic version). 2 hard copies for scholars, 1 hard copy for each accompanying family member

(4) Physical Examination Authentication (ORIGINAL, photocopy and colored scanned e-copy)

(5) Scholars who haven’t provided the ORIGINAL copy of the degree certificate (as well as the authentication), the certificate of working experience, or the non-criminal certificate (as well as the authentication) when applying for the Notification Letter of Foreigner’s Work Permit, must provide said original documents at this time. (Post-doctors under 40 years old, associate professors and professors employed by Tsinghua are not required to provide these documents)
Processing time: 7 to 15 working days


Extending a Work Permit
The Work Permit is generally valid for the same time period as the employment contract, but no later than the passport expiry date. International scholars who continue working in Tsinghua after their first employment term and sign a new contract are required to apply for an extension 50-90 days in advance of their Work Permit’s expiry date. The following documents are required:

(1) Tsinghua application form (in Chinese) with the signatures of their department’s representative(s)

(2) New contract of employment (ORIGINAL, photocopy and an electronic version in color)

(3) Passport (ORIGINAL, photocopy and colored scanned e-copy)

(4) Residence Permit (ORIGINAL, photocopy and colored scanned e-copy)

(5) Work Permit (ORIGINAL, photocopy and an electronic version in color)

(6) 2-inch portrait photos (front facing, no hat, white background; an electronic version in color. 2 hard copies for scholars, 1 hard copy for each accompanying family member)


Procedure:

(1) Send all required electronic files to gsd@tsinghua.edu.cn;

(2) Wait for a confirmation form via email (1-2 weeks later). Print out the confirmation form and sign it;

(3) Deliver the confirmation form, as well as the hard copies of the other documents above to Division of Global Scholars;

(4) Wait for approximately 1-2 weeks to receive the new Work Permit.
